3.0            INTRODUCTION

1.1     STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), introduced and instituted into the high or school of learning in 1973 to bridge the gap between the theoretical and practical aspect of learning and solving the problem of inadequate skills.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a Skills Training Programme designed to expose and prepare students of Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Technology, Colleges of Agriculture and Colleges of Education for the Industrial Work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The scheme also affords students the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their institutions and the skills experienced acquired remain a life-long asset and will become relevant in their working career.

1.2     OBJECTIVES OF THE SIWES PROGRAMME

The objectives of the SIWES programme are:

Prepare students for work situations they are likely to meet after graduation.

Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their various institutions.

Provide an avenue for students in higher institutions to acquire industrial skills and experiences in their the course of study.

Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvements in the entire educational process of preparing university graduates for employment in industries.

1.3     GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKOT EKPENE

The General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene was established with the aim of providing medical attention to members of the public. The establishment provides quality health care to students, staff, and the entire public. Services rendered include:

·        Consultation

·        Issuance of Medical certificates

·        Antenatal care

·        Family planning

·        General Surgery

·        Medical Laboratory Services

·        Out-ward and In-ward patient care

The General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene is made up of three main sections which include;

Hematology Section

Test in this section include; Full Blood Count, Packed Cell Volume, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Blood Grouping and Haemoglobin Estimation test.

Microbiology Section

Test in this section include; Malaria parasite test, Widal test, Urine microscopy and stool microscopy

Chemical pathology

Test in this section include; blood sugar estimation, blood genotype test, Urinalysis, Lipid profile, Liver function test and CD4 count.
